I believe there is a difference between being a self and having a self.

‘Having a self’ is complicated for those of us who grew up under severe abuse situations that created dissociational patterns in our brains.   Sometimes it seems I have a different self for every single moment of my life that passes by me in time that is especially dependent upon whatever demands are being made of me at any given moment.   All of them are, of course, specifically confined to this body I was born with.  The whole process, whatever it is, seems connected to memory and to feeling because it involves ongoing experience and the passage of time.

Fortunately, I do have a single self that is the one I call ‘being in the world’.  It seems to be the ME that all the other versions are a dissociation from.

As I grew up from birth,  ‘being a self’ only happened when my mother was absent from being near me, and therefore from hurting and terrifying me.  ‘Being a self’ only happened when I had no feelings, and no thoughts, as I describe here:

NOTE:  For me, writing itself can be a disorganizing and disorienting experience.  Many times I am acutely aware that the version of Linda that writes a post vanishes as soon as the post is completed and published.  I cannot then go back and edit a post, remember what I wrote, or often even reread it.

I am having this experience today in relation to the post I wrote yesterday.  I can only hope that there is something in it that touches the minds, hearts and lives of all those much-appreciated readers who have stopped by my blog today as the count is the highest it has ever been since I began this blog last April.

+THE COMPLEXITIES OF SECURE AND INSECURE ATTACHMENT – DO-IT-YOURSELF STUDY LINKS

One important point to realize about insecure attachment disorders is that in effect, our on-off switch governing our human relationships is not set right, or is nearly broken completely.  We rarely, if ever, truly feel safe, secure and connected to others.  This leaves us feeling pain and anxiety much of the time (Yes, we feel that Substance P).

A securely attached person does not have their attachment system ON all of the time.  It will turn on and off appropriately.  If an attachment system cannot turn itself on and off correctly, none of the other systems will work correctly, either (exploration, caregiving, sexuality).

In our ‘modern era’ humans seem tempted to believe we are above the rules and laws of nature.  We are not, and if enough of these rules and laws are breached early enough in our development, the ensuing trajectory of all our future development will be sent off into an unhealthy, survival-only-based for the short term, direction.

Our species has evolved over millions of years in such a way that there is a narrow margin for what is most needed for our best development.  As we change how we raise our children from an extended family, tribal and community base, we are placing ourselves and our children at ever increasing risk for suffering from insecure attachment disorders with all their accompanying disruptions for the life span.

What happened to my mother and my father in their earliest beginnings set in motion a chain of predictable consequences that culminated in the 18-year torturous childhood I endured.  They both had insecure attachment early histories with resulting insecure attachment disorders.  Those disorders let the dark rather than the sunshine in to my childhood.

There is nothing easy about writing this post.  I am tempted to offer a blanket apology for the disarrayed information I am going to post links for you today.  What I WANT is polished, completed perfection.  What I WANT to present to you would look like the information contained in my October 1, 2009 post +CHILDHOOD DISSOCIATION, DEPERSONALIZATION, DEREALIZATION – I NEVER HAD A CHOICE TO BE OR NOT TO BE about the symptoms of childhood dissociation.

I was envious of those few succinct and perfectly chosen words that presented that information on Guidelines for the Evaluation and Treatment of Dissociative Symptoms in Children and Adolescents written by someone for the International Society for the Study of Dissociation.  Then I realized that these concepts were probably part of what could be called a White Paper.  They were no doubt an accumulation of multiple minds working on a problem that needed a solution, and what is presented is the result of a combined effort.

I had some friends when I lived in northern Minnesota who owned 40 acres of sugar maple trees.  Every spring when the sap began to run their entire family would participate in tapping the trees, collecting the sap, and boiling it down in huge vats until it turned into maple syrup.  It took 60 gallons of sap to create one gallon of syrup.

Thinking about secure and insecure attachment feels like a similar process to me.  I can’t begin to imagine the brilliant genius of the minds of the specialists who discover facts and write about the topic.  What I am presenting today is still — only — a collection of their words as I try to gather enough information, and go over it enough times, that I might begin to glimpse the critical significance of their work.

Because the experiences of abuse and trauma I endured during the 18 years of my childhood were so extreme, my search of the ‘ordinary’ literature on ‘dysfunctional’ childhoods did not begin to answer my questions about what happened to me and why.  These links I present today contain what I KNOW is critical information about what put both of my parents at risk for turning into monsters.

In order to begin to understand the life of a tree I would not simply study the tip of the topmost and outermost branches.  To understand the bigger picture I would have to study the whole tree, down to the deepest roots that keep it standing in the sky.  I am not content to rely simply on such terms as ‘mental illness’ or ‘Borderline Personality Disorder’ to describe what I might be able to learn about my mother.  I am not content to simply label my father ‘an enabler’.  Who my parents were, why and how they operated the way that they did toward me, I will never actually know.

Attachment research gives me the clearest and most correct platform I have ever found from which I can begin to understand — and therefore begin to apply informed compassion — to the criminal actions my parents took against me.  It also helps me to understand the most important consequences caused by their actions toward me, and helps me learn how to transform them.

Even a quick but dedicated quick scanning of the words contained in the following links will have the capacity to change how you look at yourself, your parents, your relationships.  These words are about how early caregiver interactions — good and bad — form the brain-mind.  It is from the foundation of these early beginnings that all future development of an individual arises, in the same way that all the future growth of a tree begins with the cracking of a fertile seed and the growth down of roots and up of its trunk and branches.

The very bare-bones layout of the information in the links covers the difference between secure attachment (about 55% of our population) and insecure attachment (the other 45%).  Most researchers use one set of words to describe the insecure attachment disorder in infants and another for adults related to the exact same patterns.  I see no reason to do this.  What exists in infancy as a disordered attachment remains for a lifetime unless some specific interventions and applied efforts are made toward trying to change the hard-wiring of the infant brain as it was built in the first place so that it becomes more ‘secure’ later in life.

There are breakdowns within the category of insecure attachment that cover what happens to the 45% of people who have less than an optimal early caregiver brain building interaction period in their infancy.  My guesstimate is that about one-third of this 45% fit into each of the following three main categories.

— There are two ‘organized’ insecure attachment disorders/patterns/systems = Avoidant-Dismissive Insecure Attachment and Preoccupied-Ambivalent Insecure Attachment.   The important word here is ORGANIZED, which is in contrast to the third insecure attachment disorder which is NOT organized.

— This is the disorganized  insecure attachment disorder/pattern/system known as the  – Disorganized-Disoriented Insecure Attachment.  Serious dissociation occurs within this group as well as many of the more serious so-called mental illnesses.

There are at least two other attachment categories that may or may not be recognized in the future as having enough merit on their own to remain distinguished from any of the above categories.  They are the ‘earned secure attachment‘ and the ‘cannot classify insecure attachment‘ groupings.

I believe that the more traumatic a reader’s childhood was, the more they will benefit from gaining an understanding of this information.   It will improve understanding on a more profound level about what happened to their own self development and the development of their early caregivers.  (I need to specify here that I can make no assumptions about how sexual abuse fits into the picture of secure and insecure attachments.  That is not a part of my story, and I cannot and do not make any statements about it.)

+MAD MOTHERS AND THE LACK OF MENTORSHIP

I am thinking this morning about my mother’s attitudes about women coupled with her own self imposed isolation.  She complained about being lonely at the same time she told her mother things like what I find in her March 9, 1964 letter as I try to decipher what it is she might really have been saying here:

March 9, 1964

P.T.A., which I never attend when up here – and I detest groups of women anyways!  is putting on a play and wants me to sell ads in program so I said O.K. as couldn’t refuse.

Am supposed to go see about it – at Mauldin’s (ugh) and Thomas’ – Darn.

[ME:  How could she have any friends with this attitude?]

Oh Mom, I realize this year life is so short – I am getting grey streaks – no white in my hair!  What’s life all about?  I don’t enjoy it the way I once did – I feel such a loss!  Why?

I try so hard to get enthusiastic but I can’t.

I’m lonely for someone to talk and bubble with.

Bill works nites here and is so quiet and un-bubbly.  He knows I’m different and doesn’t seem to know what to do about it.  How can I tell him?  I’ve tried.

[ME:  Dad worked days at a professional civil engineering job, had incredibly long and difficult commutes, and worked after he got home hauling water from the creek, plowing roads, repairing the tractor, cutting and hauling firewood, running errands, transporting children back and forth to school – – – ]

David is so dear but sometimes I tire of him and Laila is a nice neighbor but Mom, I’ve seen too much of her.  I wanted those classes Oh Mom, I need to be part of the world after 15 years.”

[Me:  David turned three two weeks after this letter was written, and was no longer a baby.  As I’ve described in my previous writings, once my mother’s children, her ‘imaginary friends’ outgrew their allowed baby-doll status, my mother had increasing difficulties in getting her needs met through them.  In fact, she had another baby 11 months after this letter was written.]

I think about how my mother’s ‘time’ was before so-called ‘women’s liberation.  I think about how she was descended from a mother who was educated with her masters degree in 1918, from a grandmother who was highly self-educated and while did not work to support herself or her family, owned her own property that she ‘managed’.  I also think about my mother’s mental illness as I come to understand that it permeated every aspect of her mind and of her life and limited her ability to live a happy, healthy and fulfilling life in every dimension, including friendships.

I think about how my mother did not know what a person really was, and could therefore not ever participate wholly in friendships of any kind.  In this March 9, 1963 letter mother is alluding to taking a university class as if it would have provided her with her ONLY possibility for getting her social needs met.  Yet these ‘classes’ were really an unknown for my mother, something she could dream and fantasize about because they were NOT a part of her reality in any other way.

Yet every time something ACTUALLY became real in my mother’s life, she suffered from disillusionment and disappointment.  She was a master at fault finding with others.  That was a part of her disability, of her mental illness.  As long as her perceived opportunities to have her social needs met remained invisibly ‘out there’ – rather than within the very real opportunity she had to make friends and to socialize with the real people in her life – she could keep the invisible not real people in her imagination as hoped-for ‘imaginary friends’ — and evidently ‘bubbly’ ones at that.

I had no frame of reference growing up from which to understand that my mother’s mind was sick.  Looking back, it’s not only what my mother did do to me that was a problem, it was also what she did not do.  One of those ‘not do’ things is that she never showed me, or any of my siblings, how to have genuine nurturing caring supportive friendships with other adults – particularly with women.

Fortunately I was able to overcome my biases about ‘hating women’ fairly early in my adulthood so that I have several long term friendships even today.  But I still do suffer from something very subtle that my mother could not show me:  How to find and use a mentor, particularly a female one.  I’m not even sure that I could define for myself today what I think a mentor is, or what a mentor would do, or what I could gain from having one.  I only know that I am missing one in my life.

I don’t think there would be the same kind of mutual reliance or give-and-take between a mentor and ‘mentee’ as there is between friends.  I would want my mentor to be so clearly, strongly and firmly walking ahead of me in her own chosen path that she would never need me to further her own life.  Yet perhaps my thinking about the matter of mentorship is all mixed up with what having a mother would have meant to me – because I never really had one.

What a novel thought it is for me that parents should mentor their children.  Certainly I am old enough now that my parents are naturally dead.  But I will never NOT suffer from the deprivations from my childhood – until and unless I can truly recognize and make up for some of them.

So, at present, I simply invented a mentor.  I found two beautiful black and white full page magazine pictures of Meryl Streep.  I bought two $6 black frames and now have Meryl’s pictures hanging on my wall.  When I have a question, I simply ask myself, “What might Meryl do?  What might Meryl think?  Would Meryl tolerate this?”  I don’t, of course, have any real idea what the answers to my questions would REALLY be, and it doesn’t matter, because Meryl is my imaginary mentor!

It has certainly been easier for me to make real friends in my life than it has been to find a real mentor for myself.  Just having Imaginary Mentor Meryl Streep in this role in my life helps me take small steps forward in my thinking toward what I believe is a more positive direction in my life, one question at a time.  This might seem silly, but it helps me – and I know there’s really nothing silly about that.

My parents left me like a rudderless ship.  I don’t like that feeling!

Mentor: Someone whose hindsight can become your foresight

My mother’s brain didn’t work right!  She had no properly functioning foresight, middle sight or hindsight!  She didn’t even have mindsight!  So she certainly could not see me, could not see what I needed – and could not provide it.

It’s up to me to figure out what I need — and then to find ways to get those needs met, even with an imaginary mentor!
