My mother’s 1957 diary is now transcribed.  It covers the year our family changed from being a suburban southern California one to an Alaskan one.

Even now it feels so strange to read my mother’s writings and to realize how deceptive they are, deceptive beyond belief if there had not been 6 child witnesses to the nature of her true insanity!

Having actually BEEN THERE seems to be the ONLY way a person could have detected my mother’s extremely violent and abusive mental illness.  The more I work to try to pinpoint and identify its existence in her OWN account of her life, the more amazed I am at the insidiousness and invisibility of it.  How is anyone supposed to be able to intervene to accomplish child abuse prevention with people like my mother?

Just because we can’t see the insane abuse does not mean it isn’t there.  I know.  Look at my story — and then look at my mother’s!
